Denby Tableware

Founded in 1809 by William Bourne, and the pottery named after his son Joseph Bourne, the pottery specialised in the making of salt-glazed bottles, for a variety of commodities, ranging from ale, ink and polish to medicine and mineral water. It wasn't until the later part of the nineteenth century when glass bottles became less expensive that the pottery began to diversify into kitchenware.

By the 1920's Danesby Ware, as it was then known, was producing a breadth of kitchenware, from pie dishes to jelly moulds, as well as more decorative ware like vases, bowls and tobacco jars. All developed in the richly coloured glazes which has become Denby's trade mark.

Through the 1930's the pottery continued to concentrate on tableware, with the introduction of cups, saucers and plates to their ranges. Patterns like Manor Green and Cottage Blue were introduced and remained in production for over 50 years. Transition was complete with the use of pattern, with best sellers like Greenwheat, Echo and Arabesque. Oven-to-tableware became popular and was instrumental in taking Denby another leap forward across the globe.

Denby continues to build on its heritage of practical and striking tableware reflecting today's informal style. It has broadened to encompass crisp, clean bone china and ranges with James Martin and Monsoon.
