Johnson Brothers Tableware

Originally set up by Frederick and Henry Johnson in 1882, Grandsons of the Meakin family dynasty, they began by producing affordable earthenware dinnerware they called "White Granite". Their reputation flourished and they spent considerable time developing a ceramic slip that had the characteristics of fine china, but was as durable as ironstone. Branded "Semi-porcelain" they were soon producing large quantities of white-ware in the most extraordinary variety of shapes.

With the relocation of a third brother Robert in 1896 to New York, expansion into the North American market soon followed. Patterns like Old British Castles and Historic America gained huge popularity on both sides of the Atlantic, and helped the company overcome the traumas of both world wars and the Great Depression of the 1930's. It was awarded Royal Earrants by Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother, and twice received the Queen's Award of Industry for contribution to the British economy.

Nothing epitomises Johnson Bros more than Eternal Beau, with its delicate ribbon and bow design, gently threaded around the Heritage shape; it continues to be admired by customers today. Johnson Brothers became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1968 and remains one of their core brands; delivering tableware that is practical, well designed and durable.
